What is a Sprain vs a Strain?

A sprain and a strain are two different types of injuries that can occur in the musculoskeletal system.

A sprain is an injury to a ligament, which is a strong band of tissue that connects bones to each other and provides stability to a joint. Sprains usually occur when the ligament is stretched or torn beyond its normal range of motion, typically due to a sudden twisting or wrenching of the joint. Symptoms of a sprain include pain, swelling, and bruising around the affected joint, as well as difficulty moving the joint.

A strain, on the other hand, is an injury to a muscle or tendon, which is a flexible band of tissue that connects muscle to bone. Strains usually occur when the muscle or tendon is overstretched or torn, usually due to sudden force or repetitive overuse. Symptoms of a strain include pain, swelling, and muscle weakness around the affected area, as well as difficulty moving the affected muscle.

Both sprains and strains can range from mild to severe, with mild cases typically resolving on their own with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (known as the RICE method), while more severe cases may require medical intervention, such as physical therapy or surgery. A healthcare provider can perform an evaluation to determine the severity of the injury and recommend an appropriate course of treatment.
