It’s Hot Out There

As many of you know, I am an active athlete. Sometimes I cringe when I say that, because I am not some skinny super fast athlete, but none the less I train and stay very active.

I did IMTX last month and after doing a very long endurance race, I can completely empathize with any person wanting to train, but being burdened by the extreme heat going on in Central Texas ( or where ever else in the U.S. right now). So I have decided to put together a list of a few things to keep in mind.

  • Know your limitations. Do not engage in an activity that is over your head in extremely hot times. This can be dangerous in regular temps, but reaching 100 degrees and more can exponentially cause a problem.
  • Train in early hours or late in the evening. This is not a time to be trying lunch time runs. If you want to try something new, run in the dark (use lights of course).
  • Drink fluids. Drink more fluids than you think you need. Lots of water and lots of electrolytes.
  • Limits time of workouts. Try to do shorter workouts in the heat.
  • Train indoors. Have a club membership? Train there in the heat of the day.

Be smart when you train and still try to have fun.
