Acupuncture and Chiropractic

I have already told a few patients, but I have decided to officially let the cat out of the bag. I am in the process of becoming certified in Acupuncture. The Texas Chiropractic Board allows us to take a 100 hour certification in order to be licensed to practice Acupuncture. Last year I decided that 2016 would be a great time to add a few more tools to my toolbox. So in January I started taking Traditional Chinese Medicine classes. I have completed 4 of 6 classes and have really enjoyed the process so far.

I feel that the addition of acupuncture, will allow more range and dynamics within the practice. Dry needling, which is an altered form of acupuncture treats the triggers points in spastic tissue. This type of needling can be very beneficial in most chiropractic patients and especially athletes that need to resume normal activity as soon as possible. Also, Traditional Chinese Medicine has also been found to be helpful in decreasing pain in a lot of different kind of patients. Low back pain, headaches and more can be alleviated by TCM.

I am already having people ask about it, saying… I don’t like needles. Does it hurt? To be honest (as opposed to lying 😉 I am not a big fan of needles, but surprisingly, I discovered that the acupuncture needles don’t really hurt. In fact, I found that in the lower extremity, you don’t really even feel the needles. Some of the upper body needles you feel almost instantaneously, but then the “sting” immediately dissipates. It leans much more to the painless side as opposed to the painful side.

To sum it up, I am adding acupuncture; I am super excited about the treatment concepts I have been learning; and lastly acupuncture doesn’t really hurt. I should be certified to perform the technique sometime before the end of this year. I feel acupuncture and chiropractic will be a great fit in my Cedar Park clinic.
